Determined Deborah: Why Finding a Job isn’t Always Easy
Posted on June 26, 2017
Deborah was a determined Campbell Page customer who came to the Campbell Page’s Nowra hub in December 2016 after she lost her job at an organisation she had been working at for five years. She was highly motivated and ready to start finding a finding a job she could get excited about.
I was devastated. After being there for five years, I felt pretty awful about it but at the same time, I was focused on finding a job and getting back to work. – Deborah
Almost immediately, Deborah was searching and applying for jobs in every industry imaginable. It was a great demonstration of determination and motivation – she was exceeding every expectation. Deborah would soon find out that, although hard work is key to finding a job, it isn’t always as easy as writing a one size fits all resume and sending it off to 20 employers a week.
We were so impressed with her motivation. She was so driven to find a job, but I knew that we needed to plan out her career path more clearly. – Michelle Jeff, Candidate Coach
Deborah began to lose her motivation after experiencing several setbacks. She began to feel disheartened and insecure because she had not been successful yet.
At this point, I just started thinking of every possible reason as to why I hadn’t been successful in finding a job yet. I even started to question if I was over qualified or had too much experience – it was a really tough time.
That is when Deborah’s Candidate Coach Michelle stepped in to help build her confidence back up, keep her motivated, and give her additional guidance. Michelle started by going through Deborah’s job application process step-by-step with her, so they could figure out which areas of her process may need to be improved in order to become more appealing to potential employers. Both Deborah and Michelle, then re-assessed what it was that Deborah wanted to do and what industries she would like to work in.
When Deborah mentioned that she enjoyed working within the construction industry, Michelle and Deborah immediately started working together to ensure that Deborah was giving herself the best possible chance of landing a job in this industry.
Michelle was great. She helped me re-work my resume to suit the construction industry and the different jobs I was applying for. We even trialled a new resume that was not just formatted differently, but the design of it looked more appealing.
After working on her resume and cover letters, Deborah started to get more and more positive responses from her job applications, and interviews.
Eventually, Deborah got to make an exciting call to Michelle, informing her that she had been the successful candidate for a full-time admin position for a construction organisation.
Words cannot describe how happy and proud everyone in the office was. She was back to being her bubbly self. Best of all, it was because of her hard work and willingness to take chances.
