Colour Fun Run for National Youth Week

Last week Campbell Page’s Eden Hub and the Bega Valley Shire Council celebrated National Youth Week with their Fun In The Sun Colour Run!

Around 50 children and teens arrived eager to take part in the colour run which was funded by a grant that Campbell Page and Grand Pacific Health applied for through Bega Valley Shire Council.

The colour run saw all participants cross the finish line covered from head to toe in bright pink and blue with smiles on their faces. After the completion of the main event additional games were played amongst participants and their families, with the day ending in a well deserved sausage sizzle!

Campbell Page Grant Five Communities Their Wish

celebrate

The Campbell Page 30th Birthday Celebrations continue with the announcement of three more community grants!

Campbell Page believe that any action made to better a community makes a difference in the lives of locals. Therefore to continue the 30th Birthday Celebrations, we have donated the final three Community Grants to communities within the South-East Coast of NSW,  The Southern Region of Adelaide (SA), and the Plenty district of VIC. All three communities will see a change for the better, as a result of the donations made by Campbell Page.

Janine Hutton, Campbell Page Youth and Family Program Senior Manager, put forward the application for a series of stress management workshops for Year 11 and 12 students as well as their families. Held across the South-East Coast of NSW, the series will help students and parents develop stress management skills and highlight the importance of a positive work/life balance. The workshops will be formally launched in the community later this year.

Year 12 results can determine a students Tertiary education options. This in turn will impact their career pathways – placing significant stress on both students and their families. -Janine Hutton, Campbell Page

Campbell Page South Australia will also be using the community grant to fund an innovative program for youth. RAPPED (Knowledge Is Power) is a contemporary music program run by international Hip-Hop Artist MONSTA. G (pictured below). ‘Knowledge is Power’ aims to enhance literacy and numeracy skills for participants, illustrating the importance of the choices we make as individuals.

We want young people to be provided with a safe and positive environment, where they can express themselves -Dale Cleaver, CEO

The series will allow participants to go through the entire creative process of writing, developing and telling their own story through rap, and eventually record their own songs on site. The workshop will be officially launched later this year, with the SA Campbell Page team currently in the program planning stages.

Getting out of your comfort zone & into the Green Army

Keanu (Good News Story)

If it wasn’t for the Green Army, I’d still be looking for work -Kearnu, 21, Kempsey NSW

Growing up in Kempsey NSW, Kearnu realised that at 21 years old he had a choice. He could stay in his comfort zone and continue to ‘follow the crowd’, or he could get himself out of some bad situations and make a radical change in his life. He chose the later, and recently decided to relocate to Illawarra so that he could broaden his chances of finding full time employment and get on with his life.

Shortly after the big move, Kearnu’s family encouraged him to apply for a program they had heard great things about called ‘The Green Army’. Willing to give it a go, Kearnu applied straight away and enlisted for the Campbell Page Green Army -not knowing where it would lead him. He has now been a participant of the ‘Native Species’ team at Killalea State Park for just over a month, yet has already realised that this experience has opened up some great opportunities for him.

Kearnu quickly became an integral part of the Green Army team at Killalea, and the project has even sparked a new interest for him – the local environment. His enthusiasm for the The Green Army is apparent to his Supervisor, who has noticed that Kearnu is willing to learn as much as he can about each and every plant species he finds along the way. He now hopes to be able to contribute to the conservation of natural areas, and is building a passion to share his new knowledge of the environment to school groups and other visitors at the park. Most significantly, Kearnu has started to map out his career aspirations, with his ultimate goal being a position at ‘The National Parks & Wildlife Service’.

The enthusiasm Kearnu brings to the Green Army team is an inspiration for others, as he is willing to go the extra mile to gain as much experience as he can. Volunteering at Killalea State Park on his days off, Kearnu is eager to increase his chances of acquiring a job in the industry as much as possible. The Killalea State Park already view Kearnu as an asset to the team, and his work ethic has been commended by the Campbell Page Green Army supervisors.

Never in his wildest dreams would Kearnu imagine that the move to Illawarra would bring with it such a positive turn around in his life. He is excited about the future, and when asked about his experience so far confirmed that ‘if it wasn’t for the Green Army, I’d probably still be looking for work’.

Campbell Page Celebrate The Dapto Community

Dapto Anglican Cafe 2

A special thank you to all who could make it to the Dapto Anglican Café last week for the Campbell Page Community grant announcement. Pictured above is Julia North (left) and Dean McRae (far right) presenting a $7,500 cheque on behalf of Campbell Page, to café manager Jill Pearce.

Julia, who runs the Campbell Page Dapto hub said that the event was a ‘great way to commemorate the grant’, but also a ‘ hugely positive exercise in getting together as a united community’. The Dapto Anglican Pastor Stephen Semenchuk, also made a special announcement on the day offering his sincere thanks for the support of the dedicated Campbell Page team.

The day was a great opportunity to hear about the impact the cafe is already having on the Dapto Community. Young locals are able to receive retail and hospitality training at the venue, and the café also provides a central space for the community to connect.

Many stories were shared about how the café has instilled confidence in young staff members (pictured below), by providing them with a sense of purpose and direction. Campbell Page looks forward to a continued alliance with the cafe, as it fosters employment opportunities and independence for Dapto residents.

If you live in the area of Dapto or its surrounds, make sure you pop in for a barista made coffee at the cafe!

Making A Difference 30 Years On

What began as a youth drop in centre in Narooma, NSW 30 years ago, is today an all-encompassing community organisation spanning across five Australian states

Campbell Page has helped approximately 13, 795 people into jobs over the 2014/2015 year, getting us closer to our objective to ‘get Australia working’. Although this ultimate goal is what drives our services, we like to also take a look at the bigger picture when it comes to helping people find independence. That’s why we help people reach their ultimate goals, through a step by step approach. So throughout the 2014/2015 we didn’t just help people find work, but we also set them up with stability and purpose  in their lives.

To celebrate the past and set the tone for our future, we held a variety of celebrations across the country. We also received an inspiring letter from The Australian Minister of Environment, Greg Hunt, paying tribute to Campbell Page’s history along with our contribution to the Green Army: ‘I would like to congratulate Campbell Page for currently having the highest rate of Indigenous participation (in the Green Army)… Please accept my wishes to your team as you celebrate this important milestone (30 years)’ –Greg Hunt, Minister of Environment

From Tree-Planting to Dolphin Watching – Celebrating Our Roots

Our Batemans Bay hub at 1 Museum Place has been an iconic part of the community, since Campbell Page laid the buildings foundations in 1999. Therefore our 30 years celebrations kicked off at The Bay, with The Campbell Page Board of Directors attending along with members of our programs across Green Army, Youth, Family, Indigenous, Disability and Job Services . The Mogo Pre-school performance was one of the highlights of the event, with everyone joining in for a song and dance.

With Campbell Page hubs across Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and New South Wales the Bay’s events were followed by a series of happenings across the country! The Melbourne team held brunch where they reflected on the difference they have made in the Disability Employment Sector – with plans to continue helping those most in need. Whereas our Training Centre in Tasmania decided to hold a community BBQ, which they plan to make a regular occurrence for locals. Campbell Page Brisbane paid a special tribute to both the community and the environment, by holding a tree planting ceremony with our Green Army participants. The Illawarra North crew celebrated at the races with a variety of different program staff, whilst other NSW teams reflected on the 30 years while dolphin watching along the coast.

Giving Back To The Community

The celebrations do not stop there however, with teams still hosting their events Australia wide in the lead up to Christmas. The most important aspect of celebrating 30 years has been the ‘Community Grant Initiative’, with funds being reinvested to Australian communities in need of support. Dale Cleaver, CEO, has collaborated with the Board of Directors to engage Campbell Page staff in rallying together for the cause. ‘It’s been a heartfelt time, where we have collaborated ideas and received submissions from staff about the people they believe need help’, says Dale of the nominations received to date. ‘It’s been almost overwhelming to see the level of dedication at Campbell Page, and we will be announcing the winner of the Community Grant before Christmas’, he concludes.

An Exciting Outlook For The Future Of Campbell Page

The 30th anniversary has also marked a time of change, as Chairman of the Board David Hawdon retires from Campbell Page after 18 years of dedication to the organisation. Nirmal Hansra has been welcomed as the new Chairman, after three years of positively contributing to our Board as well chairing our Board Audit and Risk Committee.  Nirmal is passionate about Campbell Page and is committed to further transforming the lives of those most disadvantaged in our community through sustainable work.

Campbell Page rally with the community to support White Ribbon day

Together with the Eden Community, Campbell Page took a stand against domestic violence in support of White Ribbon Day last week. The event is a tradition for Campbell Page, going back to 2009 when the Eden crew started a ‘White Ribbon’ awareness stand at Tura Beach, NSW. White Ribbon is an Australian founded campaign against domestic violence, which aims to spread awareness and create an army of support for victims. Although domestic violence is a widespread problem, it is often a topic that receives little attention and the White Ribbon campaign is designed to change that stigma.

In order to help the community take a stand against domestic violence, Campbell Page hosted a free BBQ with guest presenters. An info stand was also provided, so that participants could be set up with essential information about domestic violence as well as contacts within Campbell Page who can assist with other services. The event was concluded with a minutes silence paying homage to the families who have suffered due to domestic violence, which was followed by the release of 20 white balloons.

‘It really was an all hands on deck approach, the community have played a big part in making the day happen‘, said Maryanne Griffiths who is the Acting Senior Manager for Indigenous Programs at Campbell Page Eden and the organiser behind the Eden beach events. Maryanne herself thought it was time to start setting up a community of support, hence it was her initiative that has driven the yearly White Ribbon beach commemoration.

The story has also been featured in the Magnet local news, which you can read in full by clicking the link here.
